A Day in Cebu

Upon arriving in Cebu Airport, we rode a metered taxi going to Mactan Shrine. The taxi fare was more or less Php 150 going there. No fee was collected upon entry.

The Mactan Shrine was built in honor of Lapu-Lapu, Ferdinand Magellan and the Battle of Mactan.

You will be greeted by an obelisk upon entering the park. The obelisk is known as the Magellan Monument.
Standing near the Magellan Monument is the heroic statue of the chief of Mactan, Lapu-Lapu.

There are also souvenir stalls found around the shrine.

After exploring the shrine, we decided to try to commute to SM City Cebu. We asked a lady guard stationed inside the shrine on how to go to Marina Mall and she directed us to ride a jeepney enroute to Mercado Casia. The jeepney fare was Php 9.00 only.

Once in Marina Mall, you can find jeepneys along Quezon Hi-way. Look for jeepneys with "MEPSA Lapu Lapu City Cebu City Vice Versa" wordings on its sides. We can't seem to find one so we asked a conductor on how to go to SM from there. He informed us that the jeep we are looking for rarely pass by and advised us to take two rides going to SM instead. We followed his advise and rode a jeepney bound for Park Mall (Php 8.00 fare) then rode another jeepney bound for SM City (Php 8.00 fare).

We really did not have anything planned to do in SM City so we just strolled around the mall to check out the shops. If you're hungry, you may want to try eating at Ayer's Lechon which is included in the "Ang Pinaka-Yummy in Cebu" list.

But since we are aiming to eat at Zubuchon, we then rode a taxi going to Mango Ave Mall along General Maxilom Street. Taxi fare was around Php 90 coming from SM City. Read more about our dining experience here.

After a fulfilling lunch, we rode a 04D (or 17B) jeepney bound for Carbon/Colon then alighted at the City Hall. We checked-in to Sampaguita Suites which was just a few steps away from the City Hall. Read more about our Cebu accommodation here.

After resting a bit in our room, we prepared to go on our walking tour. The hotel is conveniently situated around historic sites so you can actually walk to places. We have also observed that there were no tricycle in sight so we really had no choice but to walk.

Our first stops are the Plaza Independencia, Malacanang sa Sugbu and Fort San Pedro. We deliberately started here so that we can familiarize where the pier area is since we plan to take the early morning ferry bound for Tubigon/Tagbilaran the next day.

The Plaza Independencia is an open park where people in Cebu go for picnics, jogging or just meet-up. Just beside the park, you can see the Malacanang sa Sugbu a.k.a. Malacanang of the South which was actually resided by the President of the Republic before.

Fronting the Plaza is the Fort San Pedro. The fort is a Spanish military defense structure built under the command of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. It is the smallest and oldest triangular bastion fort in the country. A fee of Php 30 is collected upon entry. You may also request for a free tour inside the fort by one of their staff.

A statue of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi can also be found outside of the fort.

After checking out the pier, we walked back to our hotel to reach Magellan's Cross. The Magellan's Cross is a Christian cross planted by Portuguese and Spanish explorers as ordered by Ferdinand Magellan upon arriving in Cebu. The cross is housed in a chapel next to the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino. The original cross is encased in the wooden cross. Source: Wikipedia

We next walked to the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino. It is the oldest Roman Catholic church established in the country, purportedly built on the spot where the image of the Santo Nino de Cebu was found by Spanish explorers. Source: Wikipedia

Unfortunately, the basilica got damaged during the 2013 earthquake and is being repaired when we went there.

A few steps away is the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral. The church was also damaged by the 2013 earthquake but there was a mass being celebrated when we dropped by.

It was already 5PM so we decided to end our walking tour. If you still have time to spare, you may also try visiting the Colon Obelisk, the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House and the Casa Gorordo Museum.

Next on our itinerary is to go to the Crown Regency Hotel to experience their famous Sky Walk. From the cathedral, we rode a 04D jeepney bound for Fuente Osmena then alighted at the hotel. The Sky Adventure Experience counter is located at the 19th floor of Tower 1. We paid for their Combo 1 package (Php 550) which is a Sky Pass entrance and a choice of Sky Ride - we chose to take the Sky Walk. After issuing to us a badge, we rode the elevator going to the 37th floor. Here, you will be asked to leave your cell phones, cameras and watches and to deposit Php 200 to use their locker which they will refund after use.

You will then be dressed in an orange suits and a harness. We had to wait for 15 minutes or more for the walk to start. I guess they do it by group to save on time for the guide and photographer.

It was an exhilarating experience. Even though there was a cold soft breeze blowing, we were actually sweating during the experience. The photographs taken were beautiful because of the view but it was actually blurry if you take a closer look. You will have to pay Php 150 for each picture to be printed. Well, we just have to buy us some pictures as our remembrance. You will also be given a certificate after the walk as a certificate that you have survived the experience.

After the surge of adrenaline rush, it is time to fill our tummies. We walked to Larsian BBQ which is just nearby to have our dinner. Read more about our dining experience here.

After eating to our hearts content, we then went back to our hotel and called it a day.
